In this post, we will tell you what computer syndrome is and give you some tips to avoid it or, failing that, to appease it a bit.

This condition escapes many moms and dads; they don’t know exactly what it is and how to detect the symptoms.

Do not worry, we have the solution; we will give you the keys so that once you detect it, you can stop it at the root.

What is Computer Syndrome?

It consists of severe visual discomfort derived from prolonged use of New Technologies. Computer syndrome affects both adults and children. That is why apart from taking care of our little ones so that this does not happen to them, we must also take care of ourselves.

When we use technology, and this happens to all of us, we find ourselves self-absorbed and do not realize the time we spend in front of screens.

We have to stop this and start being more responsible with the use we give it.

Symptoms that make you detect a possible computer syndrome

The symptoms of this condition can be classified into different points:

Visual: Blurred vision, tearing, fatigue, photophobia, double vision.

Ocular: eye pain, grittiness, dryness, redness, burning sensation, heaviness.

Systemic: headache, nausea, vertigo.

Musculoskeletal: stiffness or pain in the shoulders, neck, back, arms, wrists, and hands.

Cutaneous: burning or itching sensation in the face, erythema, flushed face, swelling, rosacea.

Many circumstances can cause these discomforts related to the use of technological devices. The most common causes are:

Ocular: suffering from poorly corrected refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism), accommodation disorders, convergence insufficiency, or use of contact lenses.

  1. Environmental and ergonomic
  2. Being in a poorly lit or poorly ventilated area
  3. Having poor screen resolution or excessive reflections and brightness
  4. Spending excessive hours without taking breaks

State of health: we can have physical alterations or emotional problems.

Factors that Favour These Discomforts

In the first place, increased exposure of the ocular surface: the position of the eyes in front of the screen implies an increase in the opening of the eyes, which results in greater exposure of the ocular surface and, therefore, greater tear evaporation.

Second, decreased blink rate: adults blink between 12 to 20 times per minute in everyday situations. However, the frequency of blinking in front of a screen decreases to an average of 3.6 per minute.

The most frequent symptoms that this situation generates are a sensation of grit and itching or burning.

Finally, dry eyes: Tear production is lower in people who use screens frequently, whether for work or fun than the rest of the population, according to various studies.

How Can We Stop the Symptoms?

To combat this visual problem, in the first place, you must make sure that you do not have any vision defects that can be corrected with glasses; for this, it is essential to visit the ophthalmologist periodically.

After this, we must verify that we carry out these keys to prevent eye discomfort:

  • The upper edge of the screen should be at the user’s eye level at an angle of 30º and about 50-70 centimeters away.
  • Use an ergonomic chair and keep your legs at a 90º angle.
  • Avoid tobacco smoke.
  • Monitor the degree of environmental humidity.
  • Avoid reflections from windows and curtains with horizontal lamellae.
  • Anti-reflective filters can help.
  • Have a good quality screen taking into account resolution and contrast.
  • Use artificial tears.
  • Finally, take breaks from time to time and perform some eye exercises such as blinking slowly.
  • Therefore, these guidelines are great for us adults to practice; it is more complicated to tell our little ones to follow all these rules.

Since they throw themselves on the couch in any way, they get into bad posture almost most of the time.

On the one hand, it is worth remembering that we instill in them a good use of new technologies, and on the other hand, having excellent parental control such as SecureKids at hand never hurts.

We will be able to control the time of use of their devices without being in front of them.

In this way, we can teach good habits little by little, and we will ensure that this painful syndrome does not have to appear.
