Google’s New Artificial Intelligence that Creates the Music – MusicLM

2023 is on track to become the year of artificial intelligence. Google has just introduced a new artificial intelligence called MusicLM that can create music according to the user’s written commands.

As the technology points out, the user only has to ask for things like “a relaxing violin melody backed by a distorted guitar riff”, and the software does the rest.

“Our experiments show that MusicLM outperforms previous systems in both audio quality and adherence to text description,” the researchers behind the development note.

The Google team has shared several examples that show how their solution works. We found requests like a “fast-paced and upbeat, with a catchy electric guitar riff” tune for an arcade game. Also, a song “fusion of reggaeton and electronic dance music, with a spacey, otherworldly sound.”

The AI has been trained with some 280,000 hours of music to function. In addition to creating music from the user’s written commands, the tool can ” transform whistled and hummed pieces according to the style described in a text footer.”

The document, shared by the developers on GitHub, also shows how AI can create music from the description of works of art, such as ‘The Persistence of Memory’ by Salvador Dalí or ‘The Scream’ by Munch.

Compared to other AIs like ChatGPT or DALLE-2, it doesn’t look like MusicLM will be available to all users to tinker with the tool.

According to the specialized media ‘Techcrunch ‘, during tests with the solution, the researchers discovered that around 1% of the music generated by the system was played directly from the songs on which it was trained, which could mean a copyright issue.

“We stress the need for more future work to address these risks associated with music generation,” the AI developers point out.

The arrival of tools such as ChatGPT has caused the interest in AI to increase significantly among users. Microsoft, which has invested billions in the firm behind the ingenuity of OpenAI, is working to bring the popular chatbot into the browser.

Meanwhile, Google is working on several projects related to artificial intelligence that is expected to be announced in the coming months.
